FAQ

Tallow Skincare FAQ

Everything you need to know about grass-fed tallow balm, our products, and ancestral skincare.

What is tallow and where does it come from?

Tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed beef cattle. It has been used as a skin moisturiser for thousands of years across many cultures. At Glow to the Bone, we use only grass-fed tallow, which is richer in vitamins and fatty acids than grain-fed alternatives. Learn more about what tallow is and why it works →

Is tallow good for sensitive skin?

Yes — tallow is one of the best natural moisturisers for sensitive skin. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the natural oils in human skin, making it highly biocompatible. It contains no synthetic preservatives, fragrances, or emulsifiers that commonly trigger reactions in sensitive skin types.

Can tallow help with eczema?

Many of our customers use our tallow balm as a natural eczema treatment and report significant relief. Tallow is free from the common irritants found in conventional creams, and its anti-inflammatory fatty acids help soothe and repair the skin barrier. Our brand was actually founded after tallow helped heal our founder's sister's eczema. Read the full story here.

What is the difference between the Signature Blend and Pure Whipped Tallow?

Our Pure Whipped Tallow is 100% grass-fed tallow — nothing else. It's the simplest, most ancestral option and ideal for those who want a single-ingredient moisturiser.

Our Signature Blend Infused Whipped Tallow is our bestselling formula, combining grass-fed tallow with carefully selected skin-beneficial plant actives, developed across 65 iterations. It's designed to combat ageing, soothe irritation, boost healing, and deeply hydrate.

Is tallow balm greasy?

Our tallow is whipped to a light, fluffy texture that absorbs quickly and doesn't leave a greasy residue. We also use a proprietary rendering method to ensure scent neutrality, so there's no animal smell.

Is your tallow grass-fed?

Yes. We use only grass-fed beef tallow, which is significantly higher in vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), compared to grain-fed tallow. This makes it more nourishing and more effective for skin health. Read more: What Is Grass-Fed Tallow Balm — And Why Is Everyone Talking About It? →

Is tallow skincare natural and non-toxic?

Absolutely. Our products are handmade in the UK with non-toxic, all-natural ingredients. No parabens, no synthetic fragrances, no petroleum derivatives. Just pure, ancestral skincare. Read more: Why We Ditched Synthetic Skincare — And What We Use Instead →

Can I use tallow balm on my face?

Yes — tallow is excellent for facial use. It's non-comedogenic for most skin types and particularly beneficial for dry, mature, or eczema-prone facial skin. Our Face Care collection is specifically curated for facial use.

How do I use whipped tallow balm?

Apply a small amount to clean skin and massage in gently. A little goes a long way — tallow is highly concentrated. It can be used morning and evening, and is suitable for face, hands, body, and any areas of dry or irritated skin.

How does tallow compare to shea butter?

Both are excellent natural moisturisers, but tallow has a unique advantage: its fatty acid profile more closely mirrors human skin's own oils, making it more biocompatible. Read our full comparison: Tallow vs Shea Butter: Which Is Better for Sensitive Skin? →
