There's a moment many of us have had: standing in a pharmacy aisle, reading the back of a moisturiser, wondering what half the ingredients actually are. Dimethicone. Phenoxyethanol. Carbomer. Disodium EDTA. You're trying to take care of your skin, but it feels like you need a chemistry degree just to understand what you're putting on it.
We had that moment too. And it led us to build Glow to the Bone.
The Problem with Conventional Skincare
Modern skincare is largely built on a foundation of water, synthetic emulsifiers, and preservatives. This isn't inherently sinister — it's a practical solution to the challenge of making a stable, shelf-stable product that feels pleasant to use. But it comes with trade-offs.
Water-based products require preservatives to prevent bacterial growth. They require emulsifiers to stop the water and oil from separating. They often require thickeners, stabilisers, and pH adjusters. Each of these additives is another potential irritant — another ingredient your skin has to tolerate.
For most people, most of the time, this is fine. But for those with sensitive skin, eczema, or a history of reactions, the cumulative effect of all these additives can be a constant source of irritation.
The Ancestral Alternative
Before synthetic skincare existed, people used what was available: plant oils, beeswax, and animal fats. Of these, grass-fed tallow was perhaps the most widely used — and for good reason.
Tallow is rendered beef fat. It's been used as a skin moisturiser for thousands of years across cultures worldwide. And unlike synthetic creams, it requires no preservatives, no emulsifiers, and no synthetic additives of any kind. It's just fat — and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K that your skin genuinely needs.
More importantly, tallow is biocompatible. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the natural oils your skin produces. Your skin recognises it. It absorbs it. It doesn't react to it.
Why We Started Glow to the Bone
Our founder's sister had eczema. Years of steroid creams, prescription emollients, and "sensitive" moisturisers that still burned. One night, she tried a jar of pure whipped tallow. The relief was immediate. No stinging. No redness. Her skin finally breathed.
That experience sparked an obsession. If pure tallow could do that, what could an optimised tallow formula achieve? After 65 iterations and a list of over 150 skin-beneficial ingredients, our Signature Blend was born. Read the full story here.
What We Use Instead
At Glow to the Bone, every product starts with grass-fed tallow as its base. No water. No synthetic preservatives. No emulsifiers. No petroleum derivatives. Just pure, ancestral skincare that works with your skin's biology.
We offer two formulations:
- Pure Whipped Tallow — 100% grass-fed tallow, nothing else. The most minimal, non-toxic moisturiser you can use. Perfect for those who want to eliminate all synthetic ingredients from their routine.
- Signature Blend Infused Whipped Tallow — grass-fed tallow enhanced with carefully selected plant actives. All natural. All purposeful.
Is Non-Toxic Skincare Right for You?
If you've been frustrated by conventional moisturisers — if your skin reacts, if you're tired of ingredient lists you can't understand, if you want something simpler and more natural — then yes, it probably is.
